Zika Virus Update

The Zika virus has been on the minds of everyone this summer, and most homeowners have been doing everything they can to reduce the numbers of mosquitoes that are living and breeding on their properties. The professionals here at Spencer Pest Services would like to provide you with some information about the Zika Virus, including updates from the CDC, now that there have been confirmed cases of the Zika virus being spread by mosquitoes within the United States.

The Zika virus itself is a mild illness and in fact, only 1 in 5 people that are infected will ever show signs. Symptoms of the Zika virus include fever, rash, vomiting, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. The symptoms are usually quite minor and are over fairly quickly. The Zika virus is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, but can also be transmitted through blood transfusions, and sexual contact.

The major concern with the Zika virus stems from the fact that pregnant woman who have been infected by the virus are at a very high risk of having their babies being born with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which can cause microcephaly (small head), neurological disorders, and can also lead to poor pregnancy outcomes.

Before June of 2016 the only cases of the Zika virus in the United States were those that were travel related, meaning that a person traveled to a country that was experiencing a Zika outbreak, was infected, and then returned to the U.S. However, according to the CDC, in June of 2016 the Florida Department of Health identified Wynwood, a neighborhood in Miami, as an area within the United States where the Zika virus is being spread to people through local mosquitoes. Unfortunately, this means that the Zika virus is no longer only travel related; it is being spread from mosquitos from within the U.S.

Some of the updated guidelines from the CDC for people, especially pregnant women after June 15th of 2016 include:

  • Pregnant women should avoid Zika affected areas.
  • All pregnant women in the United States should be assessed for possible Zika virus exposure during each prenatal care visit.
  • Pregnant women who live in or frequently travel to this area should be tested in the first and second trimester of pregnancy.
  • Pregnant women who traveled to or had unprotected sex with a partner that traveled to or lives in the affected areas should talk to their healthcare provider and should be tested for Zika.
  • Women with Zika should wait at least 8 weeks and men with Zika should wait at least 6 months after symptoms began to try to get pregnant.
