drugstore beetleWhat do drugstore beetles look like?

Drugstore beetles are reddish-brown to brown in color; adults grow to be about 1/16 to 1/8th of an inch in length. Their head and front portion of their thorax is bent at a downward angle, making their head not very visible and giving them a humpbacked appearance. Another distinctive characteristic of the drugstore beetle are the pits that are found on their hard wing covers. The pits are arranged in rows giving the wing covers a striated appearance. Drugstore beetles have smooth antennae that end in a 3-segmented club. Their larvae are white, c-shaped, grow to about 1/8th of an inch and have short hairs covering their body and six small legs.

Do drugstore beetles bite?

No, drugstore beetles do not bite people or pets.

Are drugstore beetles dangerous?

Drugstore beetles are not considered to be dangerous to people. However, an infestation should be quickly eliminated from a home because they contaminate food sources. Drugstore beetles are not picky eaters and will basically feed on any dried plant or animal product.

Why do I have a drugstore beetle problem?

Drugstore beetles can enter inside of homes on their own or be accidentally introduced. These beetles are strong fliers and are very attracted to light. Adults will fly into homes and other buildings, attracted by outdoor lighting, through any small space found around doors and windows. Drugstore beetles can also accidentally be introduced into homes through products that were purchased from stores that are already infested with their eggs or larvae.
