Avoid Bed Bugs While You Travel For Thanksgiving This Year

Thanksgiving comes so quickly each year, and there is so much to do to get ready for it. It’s even stressful to get ready for Thanksgiving travel with all of the arrangements that need to be made. And on top of it all, you now have to worry about bed bugs. Bed bugs have become a common but difficult to manage problem for homes and businesses alike. These tiny pests are not only creepy looking but feast on your blood at night in order to survive. They can grow up to 3/16” and look like a small flat reddish-brown apple seed with 6 legs. The eggs are not visible to the naked eye and the nymphs are barely recognizable as they are the size of a pinhead. As you travel you will want to know where to look for signs, and what signs you are looking for.

Knowing that the risk is very real, it’s best to be proactive in minimizing the chance that bed bugs will find a way into your home. Pack your belongings in airtight bags within your suitcases, and once you check into your hotel, be sure to do a thorough inspection immediately. Look for live bed bugs, dead carcasses and shed exoskeletons. You will generally find them along creases and seams of mattresses and box springs, as well as in bed frames and behind headboards. You will also want to look in bedding, linens, pillows and on the floor around the beds. Take a few extra minutes to inspect all furniture in the room and look in light fixtures, along baseboards, and behind wall hangings. If you find any signs of a potential bed bug infestation, ask for another room or make other arrangements, you will not want to stay there. If you haven’t seen any bed bugs, you still will not want to put your items inside the dressers or leave things on the floor. Put your luggage on a rack or in the bathtub and hang up clothing that needs to be hung. When you leave, inspect all of your personal items and contain any bed bug contaminated items. Another inspection will be in order as soon as you arrive home, then wash everything thoroughly. Don’t forget your shoes, coat, and luggage as bed bugs can hitch a ride on those items as well.
